MAUSOLEUMS -:- MONUMENTS
STATUARY
BRONZE
Memorial art is the oldest of all arts, and the most
universal. It knows no restriction of race, of time, or of
caste. It is the one lasting and unfailing index of civiliza-
tion, so much so that it has often been the final resort
of history. Save for its monuments, more than one nation
would have perished utterly from human knowledge. And
we can readily assess the intellectual, material, and cultural
development on any people by the attention they have given,
in this particular* to their dead.
Memorial art possesses, therefore, a background of tra-
dition, of precedent, and of practice unique among all the
arts, and far surpassing those of any otlier. It concerns no
passing custom, whether of weeks or years. It is actuated
by no transient motive. It derives from the earliest past,
and is devoted to the farthest future, since it is founded
un the perpetuation of reverence and devotion, and estab-
lished in the eternal sequence of love and death.
Thus the task of the memorial craftsman is not only
creative, but also, and in the highest degree, practical and
expressive. He renders personality iinperisliable, and in
so doing, must conform to artistic and technical laws that
the test of centuries has accumulated for his guidance. The
permanent value of a monument rests in the skill and ex-
perience of the man who selects, desimis, and fashions its
stone from meaningless form to an undying testimony.
